Stress in the Workplace
Stress is the reaction that humans can have when they feel they cannot adapt the demands and the pressures coming from family life, social life or from workplace. The demands do not necessarily lead to stress in the workplace. They can even stimulate the success leading the satisfaction in the workplace. The problems occur when the expectations are too high, and on long term, they affect multiple areas of one’s life; some persons may lose control over the situation, which could lead to stress.
Stress might be caused by multiple factors, both in the workplace and outside. It can have different causes and so the forms of manifestations can be different. Some persons may adapt well while others may adapt less, based on circumstances and each ones personality.
Stress factors taking act in the social or family life may affect the behavior in the workplace, or they might cumulate with the ones from the workplace resulting in the occurrence of health problems. Each manager and employee should know which of the factors are leading to the occurrence of stress, how it can be identified, and how it can be eliminated or minimized. Working together and using the management techniques, it can be eliminated.
Stress factors in the workplace are related to weak management. The absence of a clear target, the lack of communication, and the lack of information in the organization, not consulting and not involving the employees in the changes taking place in the work place, and the lack of support from the leader are main factors that lead to stress from the management team. On the other hand, not having a clear place and purpose in the organization or having orders that contradict each other’s and having too high responsibilities are the stress factors coming from the organization.
Stress can also appear when someone is not sure how his career will evolve or when he is frustrated because the way his career is going on. The lack of security of the workplace, related with not being able to access training programs will automatically lead to occurrence of stress. In order to be not exposed to stress, someone must have a word to say about his work and the possibility of involving in the process of decision taking. In the same time, everyone should have good social relations at the workplace and not be exposed to verbal or physical abuse.
Things which can improve the diminution of the stress factors could be a clear management, correlated with diversity of the work tasks and the reduction as much as possible of the accident risks involving the work. Someone who is not skillful for a job should not be placed in that position, because this decision is not good for both the employee and the organization. Furthermore, someone should not be charged with too much supplementary work.
Now, we can say and discuss about many aspects, but the reality is most of us are exposed to the stress in the workplace no matter what we would do, Somehow stress is part of life, it depends on us how we control our emotions.
